Jon Laffoon was selected as the Superintendent in Star City School District in 2016. Jon has an Educational Specialist from Arkansas Tech University. In his 20th year in education, he has captured the true meaning of innovation in education. While at Star City, Jon has developed STEM education pathways and Star City is the first district in Arkansas to be designated as a PK-12 STEM District. Star City also has developed a partnership with Mainline Health and serves the community with a medical and dental clinic on campus. Star City School District was recognized this year as the only “Distinguished STEM District” in Arkansas by Project Lead the Way.
Jon has also led the development in Star City as a District of Innovation. Star City Middle and Star City High School are both designated as Arkansas Schools of Innovation. Both schools have developed plans to personalize learning, certify students with National Career Readiness Certificate (ACT Workforce), implement STEM curriculum, focus on the whole child and build student relationships in their community. As the Principal at Pea Ridge High School, he worked with the administrative team to open the Pea Ridge Manufacturing and Business Academy. This creative concept is the first of its kind in Arkansas with full integration between local businesses, high school content and for credit college level courses.
As a principal and superintendent, Laffoon has led the successful implementation of unique change initiatives. He has transformed the learning culture in schools while increasing achievement. His efforts to implement technology and STEM education as a mechanism for transforming learning and community engagement has led to sustainable change in school cultures and closed the gap for underserved populations.
